Make A Difference in Maine Healthcare

Are you interested in making a difference in the cost and quality of Maine’s Healthcare?  Here are some ways you can get involved…

Choose Quality!  By choosing highly rated doctors and hospitals you’re helping to support health care providers that have made a commitment to quality care.  You’re also encouraging doctors and hospitals with poorer quality scores to get better by withholding your business.  We believe that healthy competition is one of the most effective drivers of change, so show the market where you want it to go!

Learn what the experts recommend when you have a health problem.  Even though doctors and hospitals do their best to help you with your health problems, studies show that patients only receive the care that experts recommend about 50% of the time.  Many tests and procedures may be unnecessary, and they add additional costs and possible complications to your care.  We understand the importance of trusting your doctor, but be sure to ask questions about the care you receive.

Be Healthy! Perhaps the single most effective way to control healthcare costs in our state is to take care of your own health.  Many chronic diseases like diabetes, asthma and heart disease can be controlled through medication, exercise and a healthy diet, but all too often they are left unchecked and lead to expensive hospital bills.  Take a look at your own health habits and try to find something you can do to live a healthier life.  Taking one more flight of stairs, smoking one less cigarette, or eating one less salty snack can really add up and make a huge change in your health.  Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!  For more information on prevention, click HERE

Speak up!  Even if you don’t work in healthcare, chances are you have a lifetime of experience with doctors and hospitals.  Have you ever thought that they could be doing something better?   We’re looking for your ideas on how to make doctors’ offices and hospitals safer, more coordinated, more patient-centered, and more effective.  So share your idea with us HERE and we’ll be sure to make sure it gets into the right hands.  If your idea gets picked up we might even name it after you!

Get involved at work.  Many companies have wellness committees, benefits committees, and HR professionals whose job it is to get you better health coverage and control healthcare costs.  Talk to your HR manager about getting involved with these groups, and help them choose a health plan that rewards prevention and high quality care.  You can learn more about value-based purchasing strategies at www.mehmc.org.

Talk to your government representative.  One of the best things you can do to improve the quality and control the cost of healthcare in Maine is to let your local representative know it’s a priority.  Give them a call and ask them what they’re doing to help make Maine’s healthcare system safer, more effective and more affordable.  If you have an idea on how to improve the system, let them know about it. You can find contact information for the representative in your area HERE.

Share the message!  For all the possible things you can do to help better Maine’s healthcare system, the most important may be just sharing the message with your family and friends.  The more awareness that builds around the need to control costs and improve quality, the more attention the issue will get from the news and politicians.  Be vocal about the need for transformation!  When enough people are talking about healthcare, change will become inevitable.
